Is anyone else a terrible gift-giver?

I grew up being the youngest of the family so I never had to give gifts. Even when I got older and moved out, I was lucky enough that my oldest sister was a great planner and always had gift ideas for our mom so we would just pitch in.

Now I’m in the awkward spot where I have a stable job, I’m in my mid-20s, there’s children in my and my partner’s families, and I still suck at giving gifts. I didn’t even give my partner a gift for his birthday (besides planning a joint birthday celebration) because I just didn’t know what to get him. (I asked him what he wanted and he didn’t even know himself.I also wasn’t actively looking for gifts because I’m constantly on a budget now.)

Even now as I’m still on a budget, I feel obliged to give gifts because it’s Christmas. But I blank out when it comes to what they’d like for a gift. I’m definitely more of the “saw it and thought of you” type of gift-giver. I’ll randomly give gifts just because the item reminded me of them. But when it actually comes to occasions, I’m terrible. Sigh
