Although most human behaviours are purposeful, not all of them are equally effective. When a particular behaviour is ineffective, the individual’s chance of goal attainment or personal fulfilment is compromised. In some cases the person will simply give up, such as in the case of learned helplessness, which is found to be linked to depression (Seligman, 1974, 1991). In some other cases, the individual may persist in the use of an ineffective means, such as someone who uses alcohol or drugs to manage stress or emotional pain originating from interpersonal problems.
