Binge-watching

A majority of my free time is spent watching television shows, yet I frequently forget which shows I’ve watched. I might as well use my most frequent pastime for content.

I’ve learned that most Limited Series on Netflix are usually quite good. I’ve been on a Harlan Coben binge recently after finding Safe and finding it very compelling. However, I do find it odd that Harlan Coben is an American author but most of his series adaptions are either in Spanish or European English. I tend to shy away from shows that require me to pay extra attention, especially for something like language differences, because of my inability to sit still/focus on one thing at a time. It’s one reason why I don’t watch anime much. It’s very difficult for me to sit still and just read subtitles, which requires full attention. I tend to play games/puzzles on my iPad or phone while watching a show to quell my restlessness.

I’ve found a pattern with Harlan Coben’s limited series: a missing person, secrets, law enforcement, and a general psychological thriller. It’s probably why the series are so compelling to me – I can’t stay away from crime/thrillers. The series I have watched have also been only 8 episodes long, which makes for an easy time pass.

The most recent series I finished was The Stranger and it was so compelling that I actually checked the book out from my local library. I’m hoping the book is better than the series, which will make for a compelling read. I also hope that reading a crime/thriller book will make me actually want to sit down and read, and not have difficulty concentrating. While I do enjoy reading because of the stories that are told, it’s difficult for me to keep focus and takes me a very long time to get through a book. I’m thinking maybe it’s the possibility of the story just not being as interesting to me. Typically it takes a few moments for me to become interested in the book, but once I put the book down, it’s difficult for me to pick the book back up again. It’s also difficult for me to not get distracted while reading. But I digress.

Although I do recommend Harlan Coben’s limited series on Netflix, too bad the series are all fairly similar in their plots. It’d be great to have a variety of conflicts. But, it’s also great that a single author has so many cinematic renditions of their novels.
