TW: murder; suicide; mental health
This week, it was announced that a former UCI student threw his 77-year-old mother, Thao Thai Nguyen, off a multistory building on UCI’s campus and then jumped to his own death. Although the motive is still under investigation, mental health is believed to play a part, as police were contacted multiple times in the past for mental health concerns of the student. The student last attended UCI in 2019, but did not graduate, and died at age 36.
If you are struggling with mental health or feeling the pressures of school, family, etc., please reach out to a licensed professional, or at the very least, a friend! I’ve provided some helpful links to better understand how mental health may be particularly jarring for AAPI individuals.
